Are YOU ready for some great racing action? Whether you’re a cyclist looking to race or a cycling fan ready to watch close racing you owe it to yourself to be at the Sturgis Outlaw Criterium. This is truly unique event with a fun and fast course that goes right through one of our local saloons…really…after all, this is the Outlaw Criterium.

In keeping with that outlaw spirit you do not need a racing license. Enter whichever category that you feel suits your speed and ability—but don’t over-reach—riders about to get lapped by the field will be pulled from the race.

What’s a criterium?  A criterium, or “crit”, is a multi-lap bicycle race held on a short course (usually less than 1 mile), usually held on closed-off city center streets. The duration is a set time plus one lap. For instance in the pro 60-minute races as the racers reach the finish line at or around the one hour mark the race director will ring a bell to let the riders know that there is one more lap to go.

Criteriums often have prizes called primes (pronounced "preems") for winning specific laps. Primes can be cash, but are often donated prizes; bicycle parts, dinner coupons, gift certificates to local businesses are typical prizes. A bell is usually rung to announce to the riders that whoever wins the next lap, wins the prime. Primes are a great way to perk up the action and keep the race exciting for the racers and spectators.

Success in a criterium requires a mix of good technical skills — in particular, the ability to corner smoothly while "holding your line" on the road, as well as rapidly and sharply — and riding safely with a large group on a short circuit, to repeatedly accelerate hard from corners and an exceptional sprint ability at the finish.
